Luz Marina Calle, Ph.D., leads NASA’s Corrosion Technology Laboratory at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. She is a physical chemist with extensive experience applying electrochemistry to evaluate the corrosion resistance of materials and the corrosion protection properties of coatings and corrosion inhibitors in different environments, including the unique conditions of the launch environment at KSC. Dr. Calle is the key innovator of several technologies in the area of corrosion and is currently engaged in developing a smart coating for corrosion detection and control (patent pending). She can be reached at 321.867.3278 or luz.m.calle@nasa.gov.
NASA’s Corrosion Technology Lab at the Kennedy Space Center is evolving to provide a better understanding of the corrosion processes affecting NASA’s redesigned launch sites, structures, facilities and launch vehicles. Such knowledge will undoubtedly help benefit the future finishing industry as a whole.
