A leader of the paint industry in the Philippines cited the collaboration by government, industry and civil society players as a crucial element in the phase-out of lead-containing paints in the country.
The negative health effects from exposure to lead are well known, the most severe being lifelong irreversible effects on children’s brains, yet in some parts of the world lead compounds are still added to paints as coloring pigments and drying agents.
The International Paint & Printing Ink Council (IPPIC) is working with the UN’s Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint (GAELP) to promote the establishment of appropriate national regulatory frameworks to stop the manufacture, import, export, sale and use of lead paints and products coated with lead paints.
