James Calkin, retired Vice President at the HORN Company, will receive the 2018 Samson-Adler Award this morning. Calkin first became an ACA Member in 1966 and spent 50 years as a member. During that time he served on both ACA’s Industry Suppliers Committee and the Architectural Coatings Committee for 25 years.

Two presentations received the Pflaumer Brothers Awards for Innovation for the best technical presentations at the Eastern Coatings Show. The Outstanding Paper was awarded to Jacob Shevrin of Evonik, who presented on Enhanced Corrosion Resistance of Waterborne, VOC-Free Coatings with Novel Bipodal Silane Additives. The Most Outstanding Paper was presented to Mengfei Huang of UMass, who presented on Methylene Malonate for High-Performance Coatings.
On Tuesday morning after the ECS keynote address, Rick Mazzariello presented the Rick Mazzariello Lifetime Achievement Award to Samuel E. Firestone. At 92 years old, Firestone has spent his entire career in the coatings industry. Among other contributions, Firestone started Norstone, Inc. in 1982. Although he officially retired in 2006, he still helps out the industry from time to time.
