The Tank of the Year contest, a national water storage tank competition presented by Tnemec Co. Inc., has come to an end and the annual title has been awarded to Midland, TX. Rising out of the Permian Basin area in western Texas, which produces one-fifth of the nation's total petroleum and natural gas output, Midland's two-million-gallon composite elevated tank features a logo that highlights the community's spirit.
"This tank represents the community's energy and the surging Midland economy," said Doug Hansen, Director - Water Tank Market for Tnemec. "To help keep this tank shining for years to come, an advanced fluoropolymer coating system, featuring Series 700 HydroFlon, was selected to provide the exterior and logo with unprecedented color and gloss retention."
The logo features a representation of the Midland skyline, spanning the tank's exterior inside a bright blue scribble, and the city name in block letters below it. With an oil rig for an "L," and a wind turbine in the background, the image leads perfectly into the city tagline, "Feel the Energy," written in cursive below it.
This tank was among the top 12 finalists in public voting during the 2014 competition. The other top voted tanks included Lebanon, MO; Normal, IL; Carpentersville, IL; Fairborn, OH; Kansas City, MO; Chatham, Ontario; Pekin, IL; Midland, TX; Columbia, SC; Plainview, TX; Mount Prospect, IL; and Artesia, NM.
"Tank of the Year continues to become more exciting each year," said Hansen. "This year, the top 12 tanks were selected from a field of 235 water tank nominations, and a total of 14,693 votes were cast online by the public during the competition."
The Midland, TX, water tank was chosen by a panel of water tank enthusiasts based on its artistic value, significance of the tank to the community and the challenges encountered during the project. This tank was part of a large-scale water project that was completed within 12 months and is estimated to provide the town with water for the next 25 years.
The Tank of the Year will be featured on an annual water tank calendar presented by Tnemec, adorning the cover and the month of January. All runner-ups and nominations will be included in the following months of the calendar. Nomination for next year's competition will open in March 2015.
