Aqua-Thane, a new patent-pending, two-component (2K) waterborne acrylic polyurethane technology from Excalibur Paint & Coatings, Ltd., offers high performance with a low environmental impact. Test results to date have concluded that this environmentally friendly, low-volatile-organic-compound (VOC) content (less than 50 grams/liter), hazardous air pollutants (HAPs)-free system meets or exceeds the performance properties of high-performance solventborne systems. According to the company, a film build of 4 to 8 mils wet can be achieved without foaming, gassing or flow problems. The product reportedly exhibits exceptional depth of image, abrasion, solvent and chemical resistance (including Skydrol), yet maintains hardness and flexibility. It adheres to a variety of surfaces, including steel, aluminum, galvanized metals (both electroplated and hot-dipped), various stainless steel, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and carbon/fiberglass composites. For ferrous and nonferrous substrates, abrasive blasting is not required prior to application.
