Dual-Cure™ 9481 from DYMAX Corp. represents the latest advancement in light/moisture cure technology. Historically, light-cured conformal coatings have been most successful in applications with no or minimal shadowing. Shadow areas, which can inhibit the access of light, have the potential to hold or trap the conformal coating and perhaps limit the light exposure of the materials. Typically, it was necessary to add the ability to thermally cure a conformal coating in order to cure in light-blocked areas. With the new product, shadowed areas cure over time with moisture, eliminating the need for secondary heat cure. The low viscosity of the material is optimal for spraying thin coatings of 0.001 – 0.003 in. thickness, and it fluoresces brighter than the company’s other conformal coatings when exposed to UV light.
Extensive laboratory and field testing results indicate substantial progress in overcoming the challenges typically associated with conventional dual-cure materials. The product is formulated for high-volume production, and field trials have resulted in very favorable response from a variety of PWB board assemblers.
