In commenting, Ken Burton, president of Finishes Unlimited said, "We consider supplying water reducible, EPA compliant coatings a pollution prevention activity because it allows our customers to significantly lower their VOC and HAP emissions and the amount of hazardous waste generated from the coating operation. By manufacturing only water reducible coatings, our Sugar Grove plant is inherently safer than plants that manufacture solvent borne coatings and creates a much better working environment for our employees."
Burton noted that in 2005 alone, the company converted three Illinois companies to water reducible, VOC-complaint coatings. These companies reduced their combined VOC emissions by 70% or 27.87 tons and HAP emissions by 100% or 9.7 tons. These companies also realized paint and disposal cost savings of more than $200,000 per year.
