PHILADELPHIA - The International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011) is a worldwide celebration of chemistry and its contributions to the wellbeing of humankind. The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) is sponsoring events, programs and other IYC 2011 activities across the globe.

On Feb. 1 CHF will host the U.S. launch of IYC 2011, as prominent leaders from industry and academia gather for the panel discussion, “Global Challenges/Chemistry Solutions.” Register online to attend in person or view the discussion remotely through the event's webcast.

Other events featured in February include the inaugural meeting of the IYC Book Club on Feb. 2, which will feature The Emperor of Scent by Chandler Burr. On Feb. 4, the exhibit, Elemental Matters: Artists Imagine Chemistry, will open. On Feb. 14, participants will get to chat with the author of what the New York Times calls “a nonstop parade of lively science stories” in this installment of Science on Tap, featuring Sam Kean, author of The Disappearing Spoon And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements.

The IYC 2011 celebration will continue all year. Visit chemheritage.org/iyc2011 for additional information.
