At Stand 7-205, BYK Gardner is showcasing its new cloud runner,
which objectively measures “cloudiness”. Cloudiness (mottling) is lightness variations that are most
obvious on light metallic finishes. They are considered a paint defect and can
be caused by formulation incompatibilities as well as variations in application
parameters. For example, film thickness variations of the basecoat or flake
disorientation can lead to various cloud sizes resulting in a non-uniform
appearance.
Also featured is the new BYK-mac, which objectively measures
total color impression. Today’s effect finishes can no longer be
described only with multi-angle color measurement. The total color impression
changes with viewing angle and lighting conditions. Depending on the type of
effect pigments used, more or less intensive sparkling effects can be seen
under direct sunlight, while under cloudy sky, the finish looks very fine or
coarse. The goal is to have a uniform look under all conditions and obtain
measurement data that help to optimize the harmony.
The new micro-gloss gloss meters are also on
display. These have improved continuous and difference modes and transfer data
with a USB cable interface or wirelessly via Bluetooth®.
