During the Powder Coatings session of the European Coatings Congress on Tuesday, a new platform of sustainable polyester resins for powder coatings was presented by Alessandro Minesso, Cytec Italy. These resins can have carboxylated, hydroxylated or unsaturated functionality with a very broad range of acid and hydroxyl values. This platform of resins covers indoor and outdoor applications by thermosetting or radiation curing. The presentation noted that some performance attributes exceeded expectations (coating flexibility, for instance), giving possible technical advantages in comparison to conventional resins. This should permit the penetration of this technology into alternative coating segments where powder coating technology is currently not as successful due to technical limitations.
