PITTSBURGH — PPG Industries Inc. has won a PACE Award, sponsored by Automotive News magazine and Ernst & Young LLP, for the development of a commercially successful powder automotive clearcoat. PPG said it is the first coatings manufacturer to capture a PACE award since the program was launched in 1995.
The award recognizes automotive-supplier excellence in process and product innovation and management. The company said more than 300,000 BMW 5- and 7-series autos have been finished with the “Enviracryl” powder clearcoat at the automaker’s Dingolfing, Germany, assembly plant.
PPG also was a PACE finalist for the company’s “Power-Prime” two-bath electrocoat process, which applies automotive rust-preventive and primer-surfacer coatings. The process, introduced last year, applies a lead-free corrosion-inhibiting primer followed by a full-body anti-chip primer-surfacer.
