PHILADELPHIA - Rohm and Haas Co. announced several key management appointments, including James Swanson as head of the company's North American Architectural and Functional Coatings business and M. Reginald Horne as Global Business director for Powder Coatings.

Swanson, who had been Global Business director for Powder Coatings, will succeed Suzanne Rowland as head of the coatings unit, the company's largest regional business. The business's products include materials used in the house paint, graphic-arts, industrial-coatings, leather, paper, and textile markets. Swanson headed Morton International's powder-coatings business prior to Morton's acquisition by Rohm and Haas, and he also held engineering and sales-management positions with Texaco, Celanese and Air Products and Chemicals Inc.

Rowland was named Global Business director for Adhesives and Sealants. She joined Rohm and Haas in 1985 and has held a series of key financial and management positions. She succeeds Nicholas Gutwein, who was named president and CEO of Rodel Inc., a division of Rohm and Haas's Electronic Materials Business Group

Horne, who succeeds Swanson as head of the powder-coatings business, most recently headed the company's Automotive Coatings business, which was purchased as part of the Morton acquisition. He previously held sales-management positions with Dow Chemical Co., The Sherwin-Williams Co. and Morton International.

John Culbertson, director of Consumer Products for Rohm and Haas's Consumer and Industrial Specialties business, succeeds Horne as Global Business director for the Automotive Coatings business. Before joining Rohm and Haas in 2001, he was vice president and general manager for Biocides at Arch Chemicals Inc. The Automotive Coatings business manufactures coatings for plastic automotive parts.
