One of the oldest homes in the small central Texas town of Devine has been restored to its original beauty, thanks to an award-winning renovation by Southwest Exteriors, a licensed Textured Coatings of America Inc. (TCA) dealer. The landmark home’s original wood siding had been replaced with vinyl siding 15 years ago, but now a new exterior — protected with a durable acrylic coating from TCA — has restored the home’s original beauty.

The home, which was built in 1912, was in need of major exterior repairs when Southwest Exteriors was called. In early 1998, a 20-minute hailstorm with wind gusts over 80 mph completely destroyed some portions of the siding. Other sections had already begun to warp and buckle, even before the storm.

“When vinyl was put on the house, the owners thought it was the right answer, but in reality it wasn’t,” said Scott Barr, Southwest Exteriors president.

Looking for a more durable alternative this time, homeowners Dana and Tim Palmquist decided a new approach was needed. The solution they chose was a combination of two state-of-the-art products: Hardiplank fiber-cement siding from James Hardie Building Products, protected by SUPER-COTE™, a pure acrylic finish coat manufactured by TCA.

The result was an exterior look that is more faithful to the home’s original design, earning Southwest Exteriors a prestigious 1999 Lone Star Award from the Texas Association of Builders for Best Exterior Facelift. Even more important, it is an exterior finish that will weather future hail storms, rain, and wind, and the relentless effects of the Texas sun.

“We took an early 1900s home that was covered with hail-damaged vinyl siding, and gave it a maintenance-free exterior,” Barr said. “And in the process we restored the home to its original look.”

To complement the eye-catching 1912 architecture of the home, the Palmquists chose two complementary shades of gray SUPER-COTE acrylic finish’ whisper gray and mountain gray, accented with Florida white. The result is a home that is strikingly good looking, yet faithful to its designer’s original vision.

“Vinyl siding had offered a cosmetic change, but the fiber-cement siding, coupled with the SUPER-COTE acrylic finish, is a true exterior renovation,” Barr said.
