Smoltek Hydrogen announced a strategic collaboration with Impact Coatings to evaluate the industrialization and scale-up of Smoltek’s carbon nanofiber (CNF) technology. The companies aim to develop a scalable production solution for use in proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers and fuel cells.
The partnership combines Smoltek’s low-iridium CNF technology with Impact Coatings’ expertise in physical vapor deposition (PVD) equipment. According to the companies, this collaboration could enable a transition from small-scale prototypes to full industrial production as early as next year.
“This represents a major step toward industrial production and opens the possibility for customers to test full-scale electrodes,” said Ellinor Ehrnberg, president of Smoltek Hydrogen.
Initial efforts will focus on production validation, scaling technology to volume manufacturing, and testing samples through Impact Coatings’ existing customer base. The companies will also explore opportunities in advanced carbon fiber coatings beyond fuel cell applications.
