DNV Verifies 11.1 Million Tons of Avoided CO₂ Emissions from Jotun Coated Vessels

DNV Maritime Advisory verified that Jotun coated vessels avoided 11.1 million tons of CO₂ emissions in 2024, following a technical evaluation using the DNV MASTERv2 emission model, AIS tracking data and Jotun’s hull performance metrics.
The evaluation combined speed loss data across a five-year drydocking cycle and adhered to ISO 19030 methodology. The result was verified with a margin of ±2.1 million tons and equates to fuel savings worth an estimated $2 billion for vessel operators.
“These numbers help demonstrate the measurable impact of hull performance on emissions,” said Morten Sten Johansen, global category director, hull performance at Jotun. “Clean hulls have far-reaching effects across efficiency, carbon emissions and biodiversity.”
The verified savings are comparable to the annual emissions of more than 2.3 million gasoline-powered passenger vehicles, based on U.S. EPA estimates.
