In 2024, BASF generated approximately €11 billion in sales from products launched in the past five years that stemmed from its research and development efforts. The company filed 1,159 patent applications during the year, with about 45 percent focused on sustainability-related technologies. These figures were released in the BASF Report 2024, published on March 21, 2025.
“Our long-term aim is to further increase our sales and earnings from new and improved products—especially with technologies that contribute to sustainability,” said Dr. Stephan Kothrade, member of the Board of Executive Directors and chief technology officer at BASF.
The company invested €2.1 billion in research and development in 2024, maintaining a high level of funding despite economic challenges. A similar R&D budget is planned for 2025. BASF continues to prioritize innovations that support sustainability goals, including biodegradable materials, processes for circular value chains, and advancements in plastics recycling.
BASF is also accelerating digital transformation in R&D to help bring technologies to market faster. Around 10,000 employees work in research and development globally, contributing to a wide range of product and process innovations.
“The successes of the past year are the result of an exceptionally qualified team of around 10,000 employees working in R&D worldwide,” said Kothrade. The company highlighted several innovation efforts, including the development of Nemasphere™, a soybean seed trait that offers resistance to parasitic nematodes, helping improve yields for farmers.
