The American Coatings Association (ACA) announced that Dr. Lipiin Sung, research physicist and project leader at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will deliver the Mattiello Memorial Lecture at the 2025 CoatingsTech Conference. The event will take place April 28-30, 2025, at the Omni William Penn in Pittsburgh, under the theme “Coatings and Technologies for a Resilient Future.”
The Mattiello Memorial Lecture Award recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions to coatings science, technology, or engineering. Dr. Sung’s lecture, “Measurement Science for Coatings: from Color Appearance to Long-Term Durability Assessment,” will address topics including color measurement, scratch and mar characterization, interface characterization, durability assessment, and service life prediction. She will also present research on micro- and nano-plastics in the circular economy and advancements in accelerated weathering technology through NIST’s Simulated Photodegradation via High Energy Radiant Exposure (SPHERE) device.
Dr. Sung has worked in the coatings industry for more than 25 years, first joining NIST as a research associate in 1999 and later becoming a federal employee. She has developed characterization tools, test methods, and modeling approaches for polymeric systems used in infrastructure applications and has served as director and project leader of the NIST/Industry Polymer Surface and Interfaces Consortium. Her work has earned recognition, including FSCT’s John A. Gordon Best Paper Award, NIST’s Bronze Medal Award, and ACA’s Roon Foundation Award (second place).
The CoatingsTech Conference will also feature pre-conference short courses, technical sessions across multiple tracks, and a full-day session on Service Life Prediction.
