Pilot Chemical Company is set to bring Kao Corporation’s Bio IOS® surfactant technology to the North American market. The company announced an exclusive partnership with Kao to introduce the new sustainable surfactant, which is made from biobased internal olefin sulfonates. The Bio IOS® technology is designed to help customers meet their sustainability goals without sacrificing performance. It can be used in a variety of applications, including household, industrial and institutional products, as well as personal care items.
In addition to its use in these areas, the Bio IOS® surfactant can also be used in emulsion polymerization as a processing aid. This makes it a valuable component in the production of latex products, which are used in paints and coatings.
As part of the partnership, Pilot Chemical will serve as the exclusive marketing channel and sulfonation partner for the Bio IOS® technology in North America. The company will also produce the surfactant at its Middletown, Ohio facility.
Kao will provide the Bio IOS® technology and the necessary feedstock supply. The company is known for its commitment to sustainability and its focus on high-quality products.
Pilot Chemical CEO Mike Clark expressed excitement about the partnership and the opportunity to bring Kao’s sustainable technology to the company’s customers.
“Kao has a rich history in the chemical and consumer products industries and provides sustainable and high-quality products and services to consumers around the globe,” said Clark. “We are excited to add Kao’s high-performance, sustainable technology to our line of innovative biobased surfactants.”
Kao’s Senior Executive Officer Daisuke Hamada also highlighted the potential for the partnership to drive innovation and increase the recognition of the Bio IOS® surfactant.
“We are looking forward to partnering with Pilot Chemical Company, a leader with extensive expertise in the North American market, and to amplifying the future of sustainable surfactants through Bio IOS® technology,” said Hamada. “We are confident that this strategic partnership will foster new innovations and enhance the recognition of Bio IOS® biobased surfactant's exceptional performance.”
The Bio IOS® surfactant is expected to be available in commercial quantities starting in 2026.
