PPG is opening a new educational space called Playlab at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan. The Playlab is specifically designed for children aged 3-6 and focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education. PPG provided a $630,000 community engagement grant and donated 200 gallons of paint for the project.
The Playlab features five interactive rooms that were designed in collaboration with museum staff and external experts. The rooms are intended to encourage children’s curiosity, creativity and exploration in STEM subjects. Some of the rooms include “Where We Find Ourselves,” which allows children to explore nature through soundscapes and sensory play, and “Le Beau Chantier,” which focuses on sensory-motor learning and creativity.
In addition to the interactive rooms, the Playlab also includes a space for guided workshops. These workshops will be led by museum educators and guest artists and will focus on inquiry, collaboration and creative tinkering.
PPG’s contribution to the Playlab included the use of their Sigma Coatings paints. The company also provided funding for the design and construction of the space. PPG has been a long-time supporter of the National Museum of Science and Technology and has collaborated on various initiatives to inspire young learners in science and technology.
“PPG's contribution has been essential in bringing Playlab to life,” said Fiorenzo Marco Galli, general director of the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci. “Its financial support and expertise in paints have enabled us to create a unique space where young children can explore, imagine and develop a lifelong interest in science and technology. We are grateful for PPG’s commitment to fostering creativity and learning in our youngest visitors.”
PPG’s support for the Playlab is part of the company’s larger community engagement efforts. In 2023, PPG invested more than $17.5 million in various community initiatives around the world. The company’s community engagement efforts are focused on bringing color and brightness to PPG communities and supporting educational opportunities.
