Dunn-Edwards Corporation announced the retirement of Karl Altergott, its president and CEO, effective February 2025, following 16 years of leadership marked by significant advancements. Chief Operating Officer Monte Lewis has been promoted to CEO, effective March 1, 2025, according to the Dunn-Edwards Board of Directors and the co-presidents of Nippon Paint.

Altergott, who joined Dunn-Edwards in 2006, oversaw milestones including the establishment of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, the completion of a new corporate headquarters, the addition of 75 new store locations, and the company’s transition from a family-run business to part of Nippon Paint Holdings. He will continue contributing to Nippon Paint as an executive advisor.

“Serving as the CEO of Dunn-Edwards has been one of my greatest privileges,” Altergott said. “Dunn-Edwards is in great hands with Monte Lewis, and I look forward to watching the brand’s continued growth.”

Lewis, who has led the company’s sales organization for nearly 16 years, was promoted to COO in February 2024. The board and Nippon Paint leadership expressed confidence in his ability to grow Dunn-Edwards’ architectural footprint in the U.S.

“I am fortunate to begin this journey on the solid foundation that Karl and his team built over the past 16 years,” Lewis said. “Looking ahead, we will continue to strengthen our presence in core markets while expanding into new geographic and product segments.”

Dunn-Edwards also announced the promotion of Nick Hess to executive vice president. Hess, who has led the company’s stores team for more than 20 years, will work alongside Lewis on the executive team.

This leadership transition comes as Dunn-Edwards approaches its 100th anniversary in 2025. For more about the company’s legacy and vision, visit www.dunnedwards.com.
