Two new polyurethane thickeners containing over 90% bio-based carbon content have been introduced for architectural coatings applications. The additives, derived primarily from sugar cane waste streams, are VOC-free and comply with EU Eco-label requirements. The high-shear thickener contains 92% biobased carbon content and provides spatter resistance and film build properties. Its companion medium-low-shear product features 90% bio-based content while preventing sagging and enabling smooth finishes.

Both additives are compatible with various binder systems including acrylic, styrene acrylic, VAE and PUD formulations. The thickeners are free of tin, APEO, MIT/BIT and TEA while meeting standards for EU Ecolabel, Nordic Swan and French NF certifications. The bio-based materials do not compete with food supply chains, as they utilize waste stream materials per ISCC Plus definitions.
