A new spherical ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) fine powder, Mipelon, from Mitsui Chemicals Europe offers manufacturers an alternative to PTFE for improving sliding properties and abrasion resistance in coatings, plastics and rubbers. The powder features an average particle size of 10 µm for its finest grade, with specialized versions suitable for temperatures up to 120 °C and a specialty grade rated for 200 °C in hydrocarbon oil applications. With a density of 0.97 g/cm³—approximately half that of PTFE the material provides weight reduction benefits while maintaining performance.

The powder's spherical particles and narrow size distribution support good dispersion in various applications, including electrostatic powder coatings and water- or solvent-based spray coatings. Most grades comply with EU and US food contact regulations. Commercial availability for new grades with particle sizes under 5 µm is expected by late 2025.
