BASF has opened a new production line for water-based dispersions at its site in Heerenveen. The expansion, which increases production capacity without adding CO₂ emissions, utilizes the existing infrastructure and buildings. The facility will run on green electricity sourced from the Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm, a joint venture involving BASF, Vattenfall, and Allianz.
“I am proud that we have achieved this expansion without additional CO₂ emissions. Our site aims to become CO₂ neutral and contribute to BASF’s climate protection targets while continuing to grow with low-ecological footprint products,” said Sjoerd Visser, site manager.
Supporting Sustainable Packaging Transition
BASF’s new line allows for growth in producing strategically important products, enabling a shift from plastic to paper-based packaging and enhancing water-based products with barrier properties. The expansion also supports an increase in bio-based products in the printing, packaging, and coatings markets.
Increased Production Capacity
The new line will increase production of Joncryl® and Acronal Pro® water-based products. Joncryl®, an eco-friendly polymer for food-safe inks, and Acronal Pro® polymers, which enhance paint color and gloss, both align with sustainable product trends.
“The Heerenveen site is ideally suited for this investment due to its infrastructure and expertise,” said Visser. “Despite the challenges of achieving climate neutrality, circularity, digitalization, and implementing the EU’s Chemical Strategy for Sustainability, our team is committed to tackling these issues and supporting our customers in Europe.”
