California has enacted a new law that will significantly expand the products collected by the PaintCare program, a move that broadens the scope of recycling and disposal options for various architectural products. PaintCare, which manages the state’s paint stewardship program, currently oversees the collection and proper disposal of leftover architectural paint.
The new legislation, effective Jan. 1, 2025, will extend PaintCare’s collection to include additional products such as stains, varnishes and wood coatings. This expansion aims to increase recycling opportunities for consumers while reducing hazardous waste and its impact on the environment.
"California continues to lead in environmental stewardship, and this new law is another step forward in sustainable product management," said Jeremy Jones, PaintCare’s director of operations. "The expanded program will make it easier for residents and businesses to responsibly dispose of more products."
This expansion comes as part of California’s ongoing efforts to improve recycling programs and reduce waste sent to landfills. PaintCare, which operates in several states, has collected millions of gallons of leftover paint since its inception, helping reduce environmental harm and conserve resources.
