PPG announced its 2025 Color of the Year, Purple Basil (PPG1046-7), a bold yet soothing dusty violet hue symbolizing adaptability during times of change. Known as Amethyst Shadow and Acai Berry in some European markets, the color is part of PPG’s 2025 “Kinetic” global color theme, which features four distinct palettes.
“As consumers embrace a period of newness, movement is a global theme shaping design trends,” said Vanessa Peterson, PPG global color styling lead, consumer products, industrial coatings. “The Kinetic theme reflects the need for self-reliance in a fast-paced world and highlights the interplay between nature and science.”
Purple Basil works well in both traditional and edgy designs, balancing warmth and mystery. Its kinetic energy complements the 40 colors in PPG’s 2025 palettes: Extra Celestial, Bio-Fuse, Artificial, and Earth and Archive.
“It’s a transformative time driven by tools like AI, which are fostering human creativity,” Peterson added. “Consumers are moving past soft, safe colors and embracing richer, more dynamic tones.”
Purple Basil and the Kinetic palettes address consumer demands for innovation and adaptability in industrial design. The colors provide a dynamic aesthetic for consumer products, architecture, and automotive applications.
“Purple Basil is a mid-tone with a neutral undertone, making it rich, multidimensional, and comforting—a nuanced neutral,” Peterson said.
Selected through collaboration among PPG color stylists, the 2025 Color of the Year reflects global social, cultural, and political dynamics. PPG’s color forecasting process considers trends worldwide to create a collection resonating with diverse audiences.
