PPG announced the completion of a COLORFUL COMMUNITIES® project that helped beautify educational spaces at the Rock Hill Schools Applied Technology Center (ATC) in Rock Hill, S.C. The project brought together 40 PPG volunteers in partnership with Team Penske to paint a hallway mural and brighten classrooms that focus on automotive service technology and collision repair and refinishing.
PPG provided more than 15 gallons of coatings including PITT-GLAZE®, SUN PROOF®, ADVANTAGE™ and PITT-TECH® paints by PPG. The mural was designed by Osiris Rain Studios, international muralist and post-contemporary figurative painter, bringing together concepts of the school’s automotive programs.
“We were so grateful for the opportunity to take part in this project, especially in partnership with Team Penske,” said Meghan Barrera, PPG Business Director, allied products, Automotive Refinish. “When we heard about the school and the automotive courses offered, we knew it was a perfect match – the curriculum being taught is what we do every day. It was truly a rewarding experience for all.”
Students in the automotive programs at the ATC also had the opportunity to hear from Austin Cindric, NASCAR Cup Series driver of the No. 2 Ford Mustang for Team Penske, and his pit crew, for a career talk about working in the racing industry.
“PPG has been a valuable partner to Team Penske for a long time, and it’s always great when we can help support its Colorful Communities projects, especially right here so close to home,” said Cindric. “The project at the ATC aligned perfectly for my No. 2 team to join me to paint and talk about careers in motorsports.”
The ATC provides students the opportunity to use academic skills in a hands-on learning environment, for success after high school in college, technical/specialty school, or the workforce.
“We can’t thank PPG and the Team Penske volunteers enough for their efforts and investment in our school,” said Jen Newendyke, ATC Director, Rock Hill Schools. “We look forward to continuing to work with PPG’s Rock Hill site to provide opportunities for our students to learn more about the automotive industry, setting them up for success after high school.”
