PPG’s color forecasting process is unique, as it leverages PPG’s global expertise to accurately and authoritatively predict global color trends.

Each year, over 30 of PPG’s global color experts from 11 different countries come together to share emerging trends from their regions and business unit sectors. These insights are gleaned through attending local design shows and keeping a finger on the pulse of runway and architecture trends, as well as lifestyle directions, demographic changes, societal, and other macroeconomic influences rising to prominence on a regional level.

When these color experts come together for PPG’s annual Global Color Forecasting Workshop, similarities are identified between popular colors in different regions and business units, which in turn inform the creation of a color palette that is representative of the emerging trends identified at the workshop. The end result is an on-trend color palette that is likely to resonate with everyone, professionals and DIYers alike, due to their usability in a variety of applications.

Another outcome of the Global Color Forecasting Workshop is the prediction of the color that will be the most dominant in the market in the year to come, so that our customers, specifically in the architectural coatings space, can use that color to create a cohesive space. When the global color experts reach consensus on the color of the year selection, they are confident that the color they have chosen will resonate with consumers across all sectors – home décor, furnishings automotive, and consumer electronics, to name a few – in the coming year.

Introducing PPG’s 2023 Color of the Year: Vining Ivy

When PPG’s color stylists met in January of 2022 to present color trends from their regions and areas of business, one theme resonated throughout; in this post-COVID era, consumers are seeking to simplify. The pandemic shed light on the importance of serenity and little moments.

Vining Ivy (PPG1148-6), a beautifully robust and refined blue-green, was selected as the 2023 Color of the Year, as it perfectly embodies this trend towards simplicity. Vining Ivy is an energizing, yet grounding blue-green that can be used in any space. Its versatility takes the guesswork out of design, leaving consumers with more time to indulge in the things that matter most to them.

Our color experts see the adaptable Vining Ivy appearing across exterior and interior commercial and residential spaces, styles and textures in the coming year. Design trends have always reflected cultural movement, so the driver of our 2023 forecast is the very idea of reflection itself; reflecting on what matters to us most, our relationship to the planet, and even the way we engage with others. To further help consumers find colors that resonate with them, our color stylists also developed three Color of the Year palettes: Serenity, Origin and Duality.
