PITTSBURGH – PPG received two 2019 Chairman’s Awards from the Metal Construction Association (MCA) during the organization’s 2020 Winter Meeting in Palm Springs, California, Jan. 14, 2020. PPG was the only coatings manufacturer to be recognized.
In the Municipal category, PPG was honored for its contributions to the Calgary Central Library in Alberta, Canada, which features PPG DURANAR™ coatings on window frames and other extruded components. Designed to evoke snowflakes or cracked ice on a lake, the coatings include two PPG Duranar colors – Bright White and Broken Ice, a custom color topped by a pearlescent clearcoat.
Hydro of Portland, Oregon, a member of the PPG CAP CERTIFIED APPLICATOR PROGRAM™ (PPG/CAP), and Apel Extrusions of Calgary applied the coatings. The library, which was designed by Snøhetta of Oslo, Norway, and DIALOG of Calgary, is characterized by a dynamic triple-glazed façade that incorporates more than 460 alternating polygonal panels of fritted glass and iridescent aluminum.
In the Institutional category, PPG was recognized for supplying PPG Duranar coatings for the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston. The coatings were used on metal roofs covering the building’s east and west courtyards. Overly Manufacturing of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, manufactured the metal roofing panels. Tnemec Co. of Compton, California, was the coatings applicator.
“We are proud to be recognized by the MCA for the beauty, quality and versatility of our coatings,” said Kevin Braun, PPG Vice President, Industrial Coatings. “Both projects demonstrate PPG’s strong relationship with architects and designers and our dedication to truly understanding their needs. Together, we found the perfect colors and finishes for the projects, all while navigating difficult environmental challenges to yield success. We look forward to the continued work with our partners to add beauty to the world’s skylines.”
Based on a proven 70% polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) formulation, PPG Duranar coatings have protected commercial buildings of every type for more than 50 years. Other global landmarks finished with PPG Duranar coatings include the Empire State Building in New York; the Louvre Pyramid in Paris; Shanghai World Financial Center in China; Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
The annual Chairman’s Awards recognize exceptional building projects involving MCA members. The awards are based on overall appearance, the significance of metal in the project, innovative use of metal and the role of metal in achieving project objectives.
