2016 Global Top 10 and PCI 25: Top Paint and Coatings Companies
It’s time again for PCI’s annual ranking of the top 10 global and top 25 paint and coating manufacturers. The ranking is based on 2015 coatings sales only. Sales of other non-coating products are not included. PCI’s Karen Parker spends months conducting research for this report, using annual reports, websites, press releases and direct contact with companies to compile the information. The biggest news in the industry this year was the March announcement of an agreement wherein Sherwin-Williams will buy Valspar in a deal valued at more than $9 million. It will be interesting to see how this acquisition will affect the industry. PPG’s global coatings businesses comprise coatings for the aerospace, architectural, automotive OEM, automotive refinish, industrial, packaging, protective and marine, and specialty markets. The company serves customers in markets and aftermarkets for transportation, industrial, consumer products and construction.
In 2015, PPG delivered record full-year adjusted earnings per diluted share from continuing operations of $5.69, up 17% year-over-year. Coatings represented about 93% of PPG’s 2015 total net sales from continuing operations of $15.3 billion, consistent with the prior year. Of this total, the company’s Performance Coatings segment [aerospace, architectural coatings – Americas and Asia Pacific; architectural coatings – EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa); automotive refinish, and protective and marine coatings businesses] saw about $8.77 billion in total net sales, and its Industrial Coatings segment (automotive OEM coatings, industrial coatings, packaging coatings, and specialty coatings and materials businesses) saw about $5.48 billion.

The company’s results remained consistent year-over-year in 2015 despite the persistent, unfavorable impact of weaker foreign currencies, which were more than offset by benefits from its earnings-accretive cash deployment, improving sales volumes and its focus on costs.
PPG continued to execute on strategic objectives through the year, with accretive expansion of its coatings portfolio through synergies realized from the successful integration of Comex, which it acquired in late 2014, along with the completion of six other acquisitions. The company deployed more than $400 million in cash for its 2015 acquisitions, which included FLOOD Australia in March, REVOCOAT in April, Consorcio Latinoamericano in June, Cuming Microwave in July, IVC Industrial Coatings in September, and both the remaining interest in the Chemfil Canada joint venture and majority interest in the new Sealants Europe SAS joint venture (with Le Joint Français) in October. Notably, acquisition-related sales contributed 6% year-over-year to PPG’s total net sales in 2015.
Full-year 2015 cash deployment of about $1.15 billion also included about $475 million for capital spending, about $385 million for dividends paid and about $750 million for share repurchases (for about 7.0 million shares). To continue driving organic growth, the company invested to expand and upgrade operations in locations such as Sumaré, São Paulo, Brazil; Laguna de Duero, Valladolid, Spain; and San Juan del Rio, Querétaro, Mexico.
PPG’s year-end cash and short-term investments totaled about $1.5 billion. In 2016, PPG is continuing to focus on increasing organic growth, including continued commercialization of innovative coatings technologies, aggressive cost and productivity initiatives, maintaining a strong balance sheet, and creating value for its shareholders.

In May, the company announced the first phase of a €2.5 million expansion of its performance coatings plant in Cikarang, Indonesia, and inaugurated its new €6.5 million technology center in Songjiang, Shanghai.
Also this year, AkzoNobel made its first award of carbon credits to Greek shop owner Neda Maritime. The credits are part of a landmark scheme developed by AkzoNobel.

The Sherwin-Williams Co. is engaged in the manufacture, distribution and sale of coatings and related products to professional, industrial, commercial and retail customers primarily in North and South America. The company has four operating segments: Paint Stores Group, Consumer Group, Latin America Coatings Group and Global Finishes Group. Net sales for the Global Finishes Group decreased 7.9% to $1.92 billion in 2015, due primarily to the effect of foreign currency devaluation. Net sales for the Paint Stores Group increased 5.2% to $ 7.21 billion, and comparable-store sales, sales by stores open more than 12 months, increased 4.2% during the year. Net sales for the Consumers Group increased 11.1% to $1.58 billion for 2015. In 2015, unfavorable currency exchange rates in many Latin American countries again posed a challenge to revenue and profits for the company’s Latin America Coatings Group. Net sales for the group decreased 18.2% to $631 million.
Sherwin-Williams reported total consolidated sales for 2015 of approximately $11.34 billion, a 1.9% increase over 2014. It is estimated that between 70 to 75% of sales, or about $8.51 billion, represents coatings sales, with the remainder being related products, including wallcoverings, floor coverings and application supplies.
In 2015, the company’s Paint Stores Group added 83 net new stores for a total of 4,086 stores in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. At the end of 2015, the company had 291 company-operated stores in Latin America, a net increase of 15 locations. The company also expanded its dedicated dealer program, adding 13 new stores in Brazil, 14 in Argentina, one in Uruguay and 58 in Mexico for a total of 575 locations. The total number of Sherwin-Williams outlets in Latin America increased to 866 from 765.
The company manufactures and sells coatings such as Dutch Boy®, Pratt & Lambert®, Martin-Senour®, Dupli-Color®, Krylon®, Thompson’s® and Minwax®, plus private-label brands to independent dealers, mass merchandisers and home-improvement centers. Sherwin-Williams produces coatings for original equipment manufacturers in a number of industries and special-purpose coatings for the automotive-aftermarket, industrial-maintenance and traffic-paint markets.

Since its inception in 1881, Nippon Paint has experienced over 135 years of growth through innovation and has become one of the world’s major automotive and decorative paint suppliers. It produces coatings for the automotive and marine markets, as well as for industrial products. It also makes paints for residential and commercial buildings, and for the DIY market.
In April 2015, Nippon Paint formally established four operating companies: automotive paints, industrial-use paints, trade-use paints and surface treatments. This was the result of a consolidation of various joint ventures and it establishes Nippon Paint as the largest paint manufacturer in Asia. While the majority of its 68 production facilities are located in Asia, there are also multiple facilities in Europe, North America and South America. In the United States, it has two subsidiaries that manufacture and sell coatings: NB Coatings (market leader for coatings for plastic automotive components) and NPA Coatings (automotive pretreatment and body coatings). Notes: In June of 2015, Valspar acquired the performance coatings businesses of Quest Specialty Chemicals Inc., which included automotive refinish and industrial coatings. The company also celebrated 50 years of the Fluropon® brand in architectural coil coatings in 2015. Fluropon is offered in over 20,000 colors and can be found on signature buildings around the world.

Notes: In April 2015, BASF signed a manufacturing agreement with Chinese company Guangdong Yinfan Chemistry Co. Ltd. on automotive refinish coatings. Under the agreement with BASF, Yinfan will manufacture automotive refinish coatings, targeting the non-premium segment, for BASF at a new plant using BASF formulas and technologies. For BASF, establishing a reliable, regional manufacturing footprint for automotive refinish coatings is important for fulfilling the growing market demands.
In August 2015, in addition to the coatings plant in Shanghai opened in 2014, BASF inaugurated a new resin and electrocoat plant at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park in Shanghai. With this investment in a local production facility, BASF is well positioned to provide its customers in the region with customized solutions in a timely manner.
BASF`s premium brand Glasurit opened its second training center in Scandinavia. The Refinish Competence Center in Gothenburg/Sweden, trains painters from all of the Scandinavian countries, as well as from the UK and Poland. The 800-square-meter RCC offers room for spray painter training and color training courses.
In September 2015, BASF opened an expanded Coatings Technical Competence Center ASEAN in Bangkok. Located at the BASF site in Bangpoo, the center spans about 2,300 square meters and aims to serve the automotive industry in the ASEAN region.
