Luxurious vinyl tile (LVT) is a type of vinyl flooring that is growing in popularity. This type of flooring consists of several laminated layers, of which the top layer (or “wear”) layer is optimally a UV-cured coating for ease of maintenance and protection. Despite of the fact that such UV coatings provide durability and other benefits, there is a need to improve stain, chemical and scratch resistance of this type of coating. Another market need is low gloss, which remains a challenge due to the competing demands of high molecular weight/high resin viscosity to obtain the resistance and durability properties. We report here a study concerned with UV-curable materials to enhance both stain and chemical resistance, while offering both low gloss and good application viscosity for LVT flooring. Tested products consisted of urethane acrylates and polyester acrylates with functionality ranging from di-functional to 15-functional. In this presentation we identify the optimal acrylate oligomers for overall superior performance to those already commercially available.
