Cynthia Baricos has been in coatings for 20 years, first with Dow Latex, then Dow Biocides, Valspar, Sherwin Williams and most recently Sheboygan Paint Company.
Sheboygan Paint has developed a catalyst that not only reacts with the resin but also interacts with metal substrates, enabling our system to have adhesion directly to metal. We are using triphenylphosphine (TPP), a weak acid, to catalyze the reaction between a malonated polyester resin and an acrylate resin. This reaction is different from the current technology because the catalyst we are using is creating a conjugated base with the acrylate resin and is not deprotonating the malonated polyester. This innovation will be the open the door to utilize isocyonate/formaldehyde-free resin chemistry in high-performance coatings applied direct to metal and over a variety of primers. Products catalyzed with our unique catalyst still have hours of pot life, while curing quickly and exhibiting superior corrosion and chemical resistance properties. In an environment of increasingly strict regulations we anticipate the utility of this invention to span multiple markets, displacing conventional solventborne technology.
