Canada Invests $25 Million to Expand McMichael Canadian Art Collection
The Government of Canada announced a $25 million investment through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program to renovate and expand the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario. The project will bring the facility up to net-zero carbon standards, increase exhibition space, modernize art-handling facilities, and enhance accessibility.
"With this investment, we're not just renovating and expanding a gallery – we're building a greener, more inclusive space where Canadian and Indigenous art and culture can be experienced and celebrated," said Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, minister of housing, infrastructure and communities.
As one-third of McMichael’s collection is Indigenous, the expansion will further integrate and showcase Indigenous art and teaching, providing additional space for public events and artistic performances.
The Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program, launched in 2021 with $1.5 billion in funding, received an additional $500 million in Budget 2024 to support more projects through 2029.
